CAPTAIN INFORMATION

Daniel Strube
Grand Rapids, Michigan
Hi I am Daniel Strube and I have Neurofibromatosis. I was diagnosed with this as a child. For me it causes facial tumors. Yes! They can be and have been removed. I had the first surgery in June of 1986. Then I went through my life as a normal child and a well-adjusted adult. But the tumors returned. I met Dr. McKennen in April of 2005. He had me set up an appointment with him in Chicago. I proceeded to have 3 surgeries to remove the tumors. Two of these were in 2005 and the final one in 2006.
I have learned to adjust to having tumors and it hasn't really caused a lot of problems. Other than when I have the tumors noticeable, it bugs me. I realize the public stares out of curiosity, but I handle it with dignity and keep moving ahead. It is my sincere hope that one day, a cure will be found. But until then will just do what I have to do. As you see from the pictures I am looking better then I used to.
Because I am blinded from my tumors I am excited to ride in the Fifth Third River Bank Run with My Team Triumph.
Special note: When I first spoke to Daniel over the phone, his tone belied the struggles he has had in dealing with Neurofibromatosis. I am humbled by his will to triumph over his disease and inspired by his the dignity in which he handles it all.
